8th Sunday of the Year
26 February 2006
Dear Friends in Christ,
Several things for your attention:
- We now have the brochures for the October pilgrimage to Rome for Michael Cassabon’s diaconal ordination. They are available in the church office or can be sent to you by email if you request one by writing to info@caravelletours.com. Also, in last week’s bulletin I gave one piece of inaccurate information: the return date from Rome to Greenville is Sunday October 8th, not Saturday October 7th. Each pilgrim must return a completed brochure and a deposit of $300 before the end of March to secure a place on this trip.
- Lent begins this Wednesday, March 1st, and the liturgical schedule for Ash Wednesday is in the bulletin today. Please note that Ash Wednesday and every Friday of Lent are days of fasting and abstinence from meat. I recommend to everyone that the penitential spirit of Lent be given some concrete manifestation, perhaps by adding some spiritual exercise. On each Friday of Lent, we will walk the Way of the Cross at 6pm, and on each Sunday of Lent, we will celebrate Solemn Vespers and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 3:30 pm. Both of these forms of prayer are an excellent way to keep a holy Lent.
- In the Third Week of Lent, we will celebrate 40 Hours of Adoration of the Lord Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist. Please set aside the evenings (or more!) of March 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. The complete schedule was included last week on the reverse side of the Lenten schedule, and we will place the schedule in the bulletin again. Confessions will be heard by several confessors in the evening of Wednesday March 22nd, and this is your best opportunity to go to Confession before Easter.
- The website of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, who may be coming to St. Mary’s, provides a great introduction to their community, their life, and their work. Please go to www.nashvilledominican.org for a glimpse of one of the best congregations of women religious in the country, and continue to pray for the gift of wisdom as they conclude their discernment process during a visit to St. Mary’s next weekend.
- The renovation of our middle school is now complete, and classes resume in the renewed building on Monday morning. We are deeply grateful to everyone who made this work possible by their contributions, and we invite the entire St. Mary’s community to an Open House on Thursday, March 30th for a close look at our magnificent new school building.
