Nineteenth Sunday of the Year

13 August 2006

Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and forever!

Dear Friends in Christ,

This August is a time of farewells and greetings:

  1. As announced last week, David Tiede Hottinger has accepted the offer of the Mere Christianity Forum (MCF) to become their new Executive Director. MCF was started several years ago at Furman University by a group of undergraduates interested in exploring questions of theology, philosophy, and culture, and now MCF sponsors lectures and public discussions of ecumenical questions and also runs Vista House, an off-campus hospitality center and the home of several students in the fellowship. David’s new job will be to coordinate the ecumenical and intellectual apostolate of MCF, and his last day on our parish staff will be August 21st. I am most grateful to David for his four years of splendid service among us, and we wish him Godspeed and great success in his new work. When David’s new contact information is available, we will publish it in the bulletin, but until the 21st, you can continue to reach him in the parish office.
  2. We welcome Richard Tomlinson, a seminarian of the Diocese of Charleston, who will be with us for a few months as a pastoral intern. Richard, who is 57 and a convert to Catholicism, already holds a licentiate in sacred theology from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, one of the finest faculties of theology in the English-speaking world. Richard will be assisting in many capacities during this time with us, and I hope you’ll take the opportunity to welcome him to St. Mary’s. His email address and phone number are in the bulletin today on the staff page.
  3. Our three Dominican Sisters are now settled into their new convent and their work in the school. On Saturday August 26th, we will welcome them to St. Mary’s with a reception in Gallivan Hall, beginning at 6:30 pm. Everyone is invited to stop by and speak with Sr. Anna Grace, O.P., Sr. Mary Lucy, O.P., and Sr. John Thomas, O.P. The reception will include refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, and this will be a good opportunity for you to welcome our new principal and teachers from Nashville.
