Twelfth Sunday of the Year
25 June 2006
Dear Friends in Christ,
It’s summertime, and so the living ought to be easy! But this summer at St. Mary’s, we’re preparing for the arrival of the Nashville Dominicans, so things won’t slow down much for the staff of our church and school. Let me bring you up to date on some of the developments:
- We have purchased a house about 5 miles from St. Mary’s which will become our new convent. During the spring, we investigated many possibilities and worked closely with the Dominican Sisters and the Diocese of Charleston to make the best possible choice for our new community, and we settled on a property very well suited for use as a monastic residence by contemplative Sisters. During the time remaining before the arrival of the Sisters, our staff will be working to have the convent in good order, and the house will then become the home of the three Sisters assigned to St. Mary’s. Each Sister will have a private bedroom and bath, and the convent will contain a chapel, a parlor for receiving visitors, a refectory, and a large common room for community activities. Given the monastic nature of the Sisters’ life, the convent will be a private enclosure rather than a public space, so most of the parish will not see the house, but everyone should know that we have provided a suitable residence to sustain the consecrated life of the new Sisters.
- I am driving to Nashville this week to drop off the SUV which the school leased for Sister Veronica and which will now be used by the Dominicans, and while I’m there, I will be meeting with Mother Rose Marie to review the last details of the move which will take place in early August. Because the Sisters have a once-every-six-years governing Chapter during the last week of July, we will not be able to announce the names of the three Sisters who are coming to us until just a few days before they arrive, but everything in the school will be in good order before the arrival of our new principal and teachers.
- The arrival of the Sisters will also bring a change in our weekday Mass schedule. Beginning Monday 31 July, St. Mary’s will have two Masses on each weekday from Monday through Friday: one at 7 am and one at 12 noon. We will also have a Mass at 8 am each Saturday beginning August 5th.
In these last weeks before their arrival, please continue to pray for the Sisters who will come to us, and give thanks to God for the gift of the Nashville Dominicans.
