Twenty-Second Sunday of the Year

3 September 2006

Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and forever!

Dear Friends in Christ,

A few items for your attention:

  1. After forty years of service to our parish as organist and twenty-one years as choir director, Judy Franzen has retired. Judy began her service in 1966, saying that she would do so "temporarily", and in the four decades since then, she missed only one Sunday due to illness. Judy’s extraordinary labor of love will be acknowledged by a brass plaque on the case of our pipe organ, the installation of which in 1990 was the jewel in the crown of her many years of work in the choir loft. The organ is now dedicated in honor of Judy Franzen as a perpetual witness to our gratitude for her remarkable musical gift to St. Mary’s.
  2. Adam Pajan, who is pursuing his undergraduate studies at Furman University, has been our principal organist since 2004, and now that Judy has retired, Adam has agreed to take on the additional post of choir master. For the two years remaining to complete his degree, Adam will provide musical leadership to the parish and continue to develop the outstanding program of sacred music built by Judy Franzen and our splendid choir of volunteer choristers and instrumentalists. Adam is a musician of rare ability, and we are most fortunate to have his service as Organist and Choir Master.
  3. One year ago we added a Sunday Mass each week at 5pm and announced when we did so that it would be celebrated on an experimental basis. After one year of experience and a careful review of our present and future needs and resources, we have determined that we cannot sustain this extra Mass for now. Accordingly, the last Sunday of September will be the final celebration of the 5pm Sunday Mass, and the rest of the weekend schedule will remain as is. We ask those who have attended this Mass regularly to forgive the inconvenience of losing it and to join us for one of the other Masses on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.
