Pentecost Sunday

27 May 2007

To live in the midst of the world with no desire for all its pleasures;
To be a member of every family, yet belonging to none;
To share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets, to heal all wounds;
To daily go from men of God to offer Him their homage and petitions;
To return from God to men to bring the His pardon and hope;
To have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity:
To bless and to be blest forever.

O God, what a life, and it is yours, O Priest of Jesus Christ!

Jean-Baptiste Lacordaire, OP (1801-1862)

Dear Friends in Christ,

The very first time I stepped into St. Mary’s was the first time I ever entered inside of a Catholic Church. And the moment I walked in the door, I knew two things: that I had to become a Catholic, and that I had to become a priest. I did not have the faintest idea of what any of that would mean, but I knew that my life would never be the same. That’s a scary experience when you’re twelve, but how many saints discovered their vocations in much the same way.

Saint Therese of Lisieux wanted to be many things: a missionary, a priest, a saint. And finally, she understood her vocation: to be love in the heart of the Church. As I leave Saint Mary’s, my greatest desire is to see each one of my loved flock in whatever state in life they find themselves, do just that: to be love in the heart of the Church. This Pentecost is a time for St Mary’s to lead the way in love. Faith and daring!

Love and Masses,
