Seventh Sunday of the Year
18 February 2007
Dear Friends in Christ,
Next week we begin the Solemn Fast of Lent, a special preparation for the joys of Easter by a little spiritual retreat in the midst of the liturgical year. The rules for fasting and abstinence are printed elsewhere in the bulletin, and we all can think of something we will give up this Lent as a sacrifice for Our LORD. But there are other things that you can do as well to make Lent, and then Easter, more fruitful.
- Daily Mass — There are many Catholics who come to Holy Mass every day, but our church is particularly full during Lenten weekdays. Why not start your day off with Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament as a family at 7am Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday before going off to work and school? Or give up that lunch hour and come downtown at noon!
- Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament — Every Wednesday at 5pm we have a Holy Hour with the Rosary. Why not stop by church after work and school and spend some quiet time with Our LORD? On every Friday after Stations of the Cross at 6pm, we will have Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. You’re just not a Catholic family without coming to Stations on Lenten Friday nights and then going out for some fish! Also, mark your calendars for 6-8 March; we will be having Forty Hours of Adoration with Monsignor Lawrence McInerny from Stella Maris, Sullivan’s Island as Guest Preacher; you won’t want to miss it!
- Alms to the poor — Do you know where the Poor Boxes are in our church? They want your donation, which goes to help St Mary’s Saturday Bag Lunch program. Everyone in the family can put spare change or some sacrificial offerings in a box in the kitchen; bring it with you to Stations, or to Sunday Vespers, or to the Easter Vigil and make it overflow!
- Spiritual reading — Many Catholics want to read a book which will lift up their spirits, make them closer to God; but they don’t want to waste their time looking for one. I have the perfect book for you to put on your nightstand, to bring to Adoration with you, to place in the glove compartment for when you are waiting for the kids to get out of school. It’s called I Believe in Love by Fr Jean d’Elbée. Call Sophia Press at 1.800.888.9344 or order it at www.sophiainstitute.com. Just trust me; your life will never be the same!
We’ll see you on Ash Wednesday!
Father Christopher
