Fourth Sunday of the Year

3 February 2008

Dear Friends in Christ,

1. Our Saturday Bag Lunch ministry feeds the hungry every week of the year, and your contributions to the poor box at each door of the church (plus the annual Souper Bowl collection) pays for the food and supplies necessary to continue this essential work of charity. This week I received from Iris Minette the report for 2007, and the numbers tell a remarkable story. From January 1st through December 31st of 2007, Saturday Bag Lunch served 12,000 meals, yielding an average of 230 lunches every week. In 2007 the people of St. Mary’s donated $27,557.58 to this corporal work of mercy, and of that amount, $23,008.59 was spent, meaning that the average cost per meal was $1.92. In addition to the weekly lunches throughout the year, Saturday Bag Lunch serves a hot meal before Christmas, and in December 2007, over 400 people were served a delicious meal and received the Christmas gift bags donated during Advent. The cost of this feast was $1,608.53, or about $4 per person. This left $2,940.46 from your 2007 donations with which to begin service in the New Year. Thank you for your generosity, and please continue to support Saturday Bag Lunch with your volunteer service and your donations.

2. Last week, after more than five years of patient waiting and five months of hard work, we unveiled the newly renovated undercroft of the church for use as meeting space by groups in the parish. A new space needed a new name, and below is the dedication as it will appear on a bronze plaque to be displayed in the foyer of the undercroft:

THE PARISH FAMILY OF SAINT MARY’S CHURCH
HAS BEEN WELL AND FAITHFULLY SERVED BY THE COMMITMENT
OF
THE McGRADY AND REYNOLDS FAMILIES
AND IN GRATITUDE FOR THEIR DEVOTION
THE UNDERCROFT OF THIS CHURCH SHALL HENCEFORTH
BE KNOWN AS

AND IS DEDICATED WITH LOVE TO
