Ninth Sunday of the Year

1 June 2008

Dear Friends in Christ,

The old school year is done, and the summer vacation has begun. But that doesn’t mean there will be no activity for the next two months. Here’s what’s happening:

+ We are adding two bedrooms and bathrooms to the convent to create adequate living space for our four Sisters and provide one guest room for visiting Sisters. This work (which will be invisible to the parish because the convent, like the rectory, is off campus) will move forward at great speed to complete as much of the project as possible before the Sisters return for the new school year. + We are installing new lights outside of Mercy Hall and Gallivan Hall to provide increased safety and security along the driveway and the plaza. + We are repairing and refinishing the floors of the Monsignor Baum Gymnasium and Gallivan Hall. + We are renovating the school bookkeeper’s office on the ground floor of Mercy Hall. + We are installing new tile flooring in the two largest rooms of Sacred Heart Hall, and, if the budget permits, we will also paint the stair wells of Sacred Heart Hall. And even more important than these projects are the personnel changes taking place: + After thirty years of teaching middle school math, Mrs. Rose McKenna has retired, and our new middle school math teacher is Mr. John Marigliano. We welcome John, his wife Rebecca, and their son C.S. as new parishioners; they are also expecting a child just before school begins, so August will be a very busy month at the Casa Marigliano. + Sister Marie Bernadette, OP has been assigned to a school in Tennessee, and our new fifth grade teacher will be Sister Marie Isaac, OP. In due course we will all learn again that when a community of Sisters are involved in a parish school, the principle of continuity is provided by the entire community rather than by individual Sisters, and we should anticipate regular transfers of Sisters as a normal part of school life. + In mid-July we will bid farewell to our musicians Adam Pajan and Val McCall, and then we will welcome our new organist—choirmaster, Kevin Clarke, who is moving to Greenville from Dallas with his wife Elizabeth and their children Lucy and Hugh. Elizabeth will be our new art teacher, and their children will be in the parish school.
