Twenty-Third Sunday of the Year
6 September 2009
Dear Friends in Christ,
The autumnal equinox is still two weeks away, but whatever the calendar may say, the Labor Day weekend signals the end of summer and the coming of fall. As we enjoy this little pause to rest, let me draw your attention to a few things:
+ This Tuesday, 8 September, is the feast of the Birth of Mary, celebrated nine months after the Solemnity of her Immaculate Conception on 8 December. + Monday 14 September is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a beautiful celebration of our redemption. The Empress Helena discovered the true Cross in Jerusalem in 320, and this inspired her son the Emperor Constantine to build the great Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. The church was dedicated in 335, and this feast has been in the liturgical calendar since then. + On Tuesday 22 September, the Greenville Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will hold its meeting here at St. Mary’s. Our choir will sing Vespers that evening at 7 pm together with the choir of Christ Episcopal Church, and all are welcome to attend Vespers that evening. + Our Bishop has issued a statement on the national debate over the reform of laws governing health insurance, and in it he reminds all Catholics in South Carolina that we may not support any policy that includes provision for abortion or the destruction of human embryos and that we must insist on conscience clauses that allow Catholic healthcare workers to exempt themselves from immoral medical procedures and Catholic institutions not to be obliged to provide insurance coverage for immoral medical procedures. Bishop Guglielmone encourages us all to be well informed about this important debate and to express our views to our elected representatives in the United States Congress. You can read the Bishop’s full statement on the diocesan website at www.catholic-doc.org. + From 28 to 31 January 2010, the Society for Catholic Liturgy will hold its annual national conference here at St. Mary’s. The Society is an interdisciplinary professional association of scholars from any and all disciplines involved in the celebration of the sacred liturgy (theology, music, art, architecture, etc.) which is dedicated to promoting scholarly study and practical renewal of the Church’s liturgy. Information about the Society and the January conference is available at www.liturgysociety.org. Most of the lectures of the conference will be open to anyone who registers for the meeting.Father Newman
