Third Sunday of Lent

4 March 2010

Dear Friends in Christ,

1. The earthquake last week in Chile has left an entire nation in chaos and in need of assistance. In situations like this earthquake and the one before it in Haiti, the very best way for us to help is to make a donation to Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the agency founded by the Catholic bishops of the United States over 60 years ago to coordinate practical aid to people and nations in need. There are three ways you can make a donation to CRS: First, you can call 800.736.3467; second, you can visit their website at www.crs.org; and third, you can send a check to Catholic Relief Services, Post Office Box 17090, Baltimore, Maryland 21203. If you can help the stricken people of Chile, please be generous.

2. There are several calendars items for your attention:

+on Wednesday 10 March we will not have the 7 am Mass or the 5 pm Holy Hour

+on Friday 12 March our school PTO will sponsor their first Lenten Fish Fry

+on Saturday 20 March we will host the South Carolina Council of Catholic Women for Mass during their annual convention. For this reason, our normal parish Mass at 5 pm that Saturday will be celebrated in the gymnasium.

+on Saturday 27 March the church will be closed to all visitors until 12.30 pm to permit our Youth Choir to make a recording of sacred music

3. We are now almost half way through the 40 Days of preparation for Easter, and so this is a good time to take stock of our progress. Before Lent began I suggested some simple ways to use this time well, and now I repeat them for your consideration. To keep a good Lent you could: attend Vespers on Sunday at 4 pm and the Stations of the Cross on Friday at 6 pm; help those in need with donations to our poor boxes or to Catholic Charities of the Upstate; attend weekday Mass at 7 am or study Sacred Scripture in Sunday School at 9.30 am or on your own; and invite a lapsed Catholic to return to the practice of the Faith by coming with you to Mass and, in time, going to Confession. Now is an acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation! Let’s use these remaining days of Lent well.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us!
