Twenty-First Sunday of the Year
22 August 2010
Dear Friends in Christ,
Several items for your attention:
1. Please join us this afternoon at 4 pm in Gallivan Hall for Monsignor Bruce Harbert’s presentation on the new Roman Missal which will come into use sometime next year. This new translation of the Missale Romanum will change most of the words we speak or sing in the celebration of Mass, and it is a far more beautiful and faithful rendering of the original Latin text than the one now in use. Monsignor Harbert was the director of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy during most of the preparation of the new translation and has unique insight into this most important development for English-speaking Catholics. The lecture begins at 4 pm in Gallivan Hall, and we will conclude with Solemn Vespers at 5.15 pm in the church.
2. This week is the annual Provincial Assembly of Bishops and Priests for the five dioceses in the ecclesiastical province of Atlanta, and I will be out of town at the assembly until late Wednesday afternoon. The only change, however, in the sacramental schedule is that the 7am Mass on Wednesday morning is cancelled. The Wednesday afternoon Holy Hour and Confessions will proceed as usual, and the morning Mass will be celebrated at 7 am except on Wednesday.
3. On Friday of this week, the Church keeps the Feast of St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine (whose feast is Saturday). For several decades, St. Monica prayed and worked patiently for the conversion of her pagan husband and son, and in due course, both men received the Gospel as saving truth, gave their lives to the Lord Jesus, and lived as His disciples in the Church, with the son going on to become one of the greatest bishops and theologians in Christian history. If you are praying for the conversion of someone you love, go to St. Monica for assistance and encouragement, and learn about this most remarkable Christian wife and mother.
4. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) will begin on Wednesday 8 September at 6.30 pm in McGrady Hall in the church undercroft. This course is a general introduction to Catholic faith and life, and anyone who wants to learn more about Catholic Christianity is welcome to attend. Please watch the bulletin for more information, and recommend this course to anyone you know who might be interested.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us.
Father Newman
