Sacred Music
In June of 2010, Mr. Arlen Clarke accepted the position of Choirmaster at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Greenville, South Carolina. At St. Mary’s he plans to continue to build a model liturgical music program for the Roman liturgy, building on his predecessor’s work and incorporating the best of the English liturgical music repertoire with the best of the Latin Rite tradition.
St. Mary’s Tradition
St. Mary’s Catholic Church cherishes and celebrates the Catholic tradition of music in its fullness. Like a medieval tapestry delicately woven, intricately detailed and gloriously inspired, the church is blessed with a rich tradition of musical and liturgical worship dating back to the very beginning of the church and in the temple of the Old Testament.
In those early years, the church developed communities, centered around monasteries and cathedrals, which preserved and spread the Word of God through western civilization. Monks and sisters copied manuscripts, wrote history books, developed laws and prepared the necessities of life, all the while singing praises to God at appointed times each day. For centuries, they gathered at designated hours of worship to chant the psalms, pray the daily offices, celebrate the Eucharist, baptize the young and bury the dead, as one faithful community.
Today, St. Mary’s preserves this tradition of music and offers it for all to participate and to enjoy. Below you can see a list of the musical organizations that take part in our worship of the one triune God.
