Habitat for Humanity - Building on Faith

Sacred Heart Herald, September 2003

In September and October, St. Mary's is joining with St. Mary Magdalene, Prince of Peace, and First Baptist of Greenville Churches in the Habitat for Humanity Building on Faith campaign. Together, volunteers from the four churches will help build a new home for a single mother and her three young children in the Saluda Bluffs neighborhood of Greenville. Habitat for Humanity is not a hand-out; it is a hand-up that promotes human dignity, eliminates substandard housing, and witnesses to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Jody, the young mother who is this year's new homeowner, is participating in the building of her home, just as she has already worked hard on building other homes for Habitat for Humanity in the same neighborhood. According to Dime Hollingsworth, the Executive Director of Habitat in Greenville, this concept of sweat equity is a cornerstone of Habitat for Humanity's success. By engaging the homeowners in the efforts necessary to build their own homes and those of their neighbors, Habitat for Humanity succeeds where government housing fails. Pride of workmanship and ownership combine with manageable mortgage payments (averaging $266 in the United States) to provide Habitat for Humanity homeowners with the tools to succeed as homeowners.
